In 2020, Young ICT Explorers (YICTE) transitioned to a virtual format, enabling students from all areas of Australia—whether regional, rural, or remote—to participate without the need for travel or venue-based logistics. By delivering the competition online via Zoom or through pre-recorded video entries, we’ve been able to significantly reduce operational costs. These savings allow us to continue to allocate approximately $30,000 annually in cash prizes to recognise and reward the top three team in each category per region or state.

This shift to a virtual delivery mode ensures that the competition is no longer confined to metropolitan areas. Students from across the country, no matter where they live, can now take part and showcase their technological innovations. The move online allows us to engage a broader and more diverse range of students, promoting inclusivity and encouraging creativity from all corners of Australia.

Whether students choose to present live via Zoom or submit a pre-recorded video, they have the flexibility to participate in a way that works for them. This virtual format not only provides greater access but also fosters a more inclusive competition, ensuring that all students, regardless of location, have an equal opportunity to get involved and compete. YICTE is now able to deliver a truly nationwide competition, expanding the reach and impact of the program in ways we couldn’t before.
